Cape Fear Creek Week is set to take place from March 18 to 23, 2024, offering a range of activities such as walking tours, educational presentations, nature hikes, volunteer opportunities, and more. This initiative aims to foster a deeper connection within the community towards the local waterways of the Cape Fear Region.
The event will include various activities like walking tours of Wade Park and Pages Creek Park Preserve led by New Hanover County Soil and Water, volunteer opportunities for Rain Garden Maintenance with NC Coastal Federation, and Storm Drain marking in Leland with Cape Fear River Watch. Educational hikes along Town Creek in Brunswick Nature Park with NC Coastal Land Trust and insights into the stormwater system along Clear Run Branch with NC State and City of Wilmington will also be featured. Moreover, the Alliance for Cape Fear Trees will host a presentation on the importance of trees during the week.
According to Anna Reh-Gingerich, City of Wilmington's Watershed Coordinator and Creek Week Co-Chairperson, "Cape Fear Creek Week gives local residents and policy makers a chance to celebrate the waterways that make our area so special and learn more about how we can protect our precious water resources."
This week-long event is a collaborative effort among various organizations including N.C. Cooperative Extension, City of Wilmington’s Heal our Waterways, Cape Fear River Watch, NC Coastal Land Trust, New Hanover County Soil and Water Conservation District, Alliance for Cape Fear Trees, Town of Leland, and NC Coastal Federation. Cape Fear Creek Week is part of NC DEQ's Creek Week Network, an educational outreach partnership dedicated to celebrating North Carolina's creeks, streams, and rivers.
